heavenly...

...biscuits come from neighbour H's kitchen and this year it is Florentines.
Nuts, candied fruits and yes a sprinkling of cornflakes covered on the base with chocolate they are a chewy deliciousness in each bite.
Yummmm.

BUT of course a florentine (according to the go to history of food book) was not always sweet, fruity or chocolatey.
In Renaissance times it was a meat pie or tart, later a 'Dish of Minced Meats, Currans, Spice and Eggs etc Baked' and then a dessert pie of  filled with veal and mutton kidneys, cream, sugar, eggs, currants, rosewater and plenty of spices
...perhaps not that far a step to  the baked currants, spices and chocolate of the florentine biscuit?
