On our boundary we have a marl pit. This is where in medieval times marl was dug as a fertiliser for the nearby fields. It covers a large area and has huge mature trees in it. It belongs to our neighbours and they safeguard it as a nature reserve. Generation after generation of foxes have lived down there and occasionally badgers and deer visit. It is rich in bird life and there is a thriving squirrel colony. For Coco it is pure heaven!
This afternoon the sun was touching the tops of the trees below, some of which had taken on their autumn colours.
Chambers dictionary says marl is a calcareous clay often used as a fertiliser
