Sherwood Lake
We continued to make progress to clear the old carriage way that once led through the woods to the Victorian house once owned by the engineer William Siemens. You can see we have uncovered another old Victorian fence post that marks the way and has managed to stay upright despite the tree falling against it.. Our aim is to uncover hidden reminders of Siemens' time in residence . He built the lake that often features in my blips of this site. The extra shows part of the pumping system referred to below, that we have uncovered.
More historical details follow if you are interested, copied from the conservation group's website.
"Williams Siemens, who co-founded the Siemens electrical engineering company with his brother Werner during 1858, lived at Sherwood Park from 1874 until his death in 1883. Siemens was a pioneer and inventor, and made many changes to the grounds of the house. His short time at Sherwood Park saw the woodland being worked by electrical machinery; powered by Siemens own design of steam engine.
He constructed Sherwood Lake, fed by the same natural spring that still flows into the lake today. This Sherwood spring water was Siemens’ main water source, and once again he used electricity generated on site to pump water from the spring up to the estate house. "
