Robben Island

We visited Roben Island, Cape Town, SA this afternoon. President of South Africa Nelson Mandela was imprisoned there for 18 of the 27 years he served behind bars before the fall of apartheid. To date, three of the former inmates of Robben Island have gone on to become President of South Africa:  Nelson Mandela, Kgalema Motlanthe and current president Jacob Zuma. Robben Island is a South African National Heritage Site as well as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

From 1961-91 it was used for political prisoners. On 11 Feb1990 Mandela was freed.  On 10 May 1994 Mandela became South Africa's first black president.

My blip photo shows a photo of our tour guide who was a political prisoner on Robben Island.

The extra photo's shows Mandela's cell and the view from Roben Island to Cape Town where Table Mountain is prominent.
