HISTORIC ANGLE

There’s always a fascinating architectural angle to capture around the Abbey which dominates the Hampshire market town of Romsey.
Currently, the Abbey which dates back to Norman times is seeking a new priest in charge, and whoever finally is appointed to the post will inherit more than the spiritual heart of the town.
With it goes a proud ancestry through the centuries which has survived many potential disasters including the Black Death in the 14th century which is said to have wiped out half the population of the town at the time.
Historians will recall that an original Benedictine church built in the 10th century was destroyed by a Viking invasion, and the rebuilt Abbey of Norman times initially served as a nunnery.
The Abbey remains as the parish church for the town and its architecture provides many an inspiring Blipfoto.
