Time and Tide
Today was a big day with a visit to Pickersgill Harbour and Astronomer's Point. Astronomer’s Point is the site of a temporary observatory set up by William Wales, of the Board of Longitude, during Captain Cook’s second voyage in 1773. The observatory was established to fix the position of New Zealand. Next stop Little harbour for kayaks and free diving for Paua. After lunch a walk on Pigeon Island where Kakapo were raised. Then a steam to Facile Harbour the site of the first ship wreck in New Zealand. It was scuttled in 1795. Through the clear water we could see its ballast stones which were white sandstone from Sydney. Because the weather was calm we pushed onto Goose Cove and the Isthmus channel. Three of the group kayaked into this area and some went on the rubber dingy. The isthmus is formed by the tide and walking on its lonely beach between the more open cove and the narrower channel was magic. The weather turned and we were called back to the ship. It was a choppy ride through rain and wind but worth it.
P.S I added another extra from first thing this morning because it has outlined shapes which I'm slightly addicted to in an image.
