The Battle of Edgehill (widwed240118)
With this week's theme being history, I am spoilt for choice locally!
Having said that, English history has been so hacked about over the years that it is often difficult to separate fact from visitor experience.
The site of the battle of Edgehill is not far from the edge of Kineton, but much of it is within the boundaries of the MoD site and so not accessible. This is a view of the escarpment from below the Southern end of the ridge looking North East. The battle itself would have been mostly over to the left hand side of the view, around and between Radway and Kineton. The Royalists occupied the ridge, the Parliamentarians the flatter ground below it. Accounts vary on who came out best, although the local villagers lost much of their food stores to the armies and suffered in the winter which followed.
In the extras, one of the displays in Radway Church which shows some of the recovered items and replica weapons, and another within the wooded area on the top of the ridge.
I'll go through the entries tomorrow and list my favourites and honourable mentions in tomorrow's blip. Started putting a short thank you and a star on entries as I see them - if you don't see them on yours, please do let me know.
