I was going to post a nice scenic view but this is DEFINITELY a more accurate summation of today.
We had already planned to walk the coastal path between Charlestown and Mevagissey so when we checked the forecast this morning and it said rain from 8am we decided to go anyway. In the end the rain didn’t start until about 11.30 - by which point we’d stopped for breakfast on Porthpean beach, and had made it almost a third of the way.
It’s officially only 7.6 miles but it took waaaay longer than it would normally - nearly all of the route was just mud, puddles as wide as the path, and only tiny patches of grass to try and tiptoe along. By some miracle we made it all the way without falling over (Graham had a couple of very close calls) but we were still caked in mud, drenched from the rain, and nursing many wounds from various brambles and branches (and in my case, the barbed wire fence I grabbed to stop myself slipping over at one point*).
We staggered into Mevagissey at about 2pm and fell into the first restaurant we saw. Everyone else looked reasonably fancy so we sheepishly tried to tame our hair and hide our muddiness. We ate A LOT then caught the bus back to St Austell.
We cleaned our shoes and jeans when we got in, had showers to warm up and sat on the sofa under the duvet. That was about 4 hours ago and we haven’t moved since.
*my tetanus is up to date, fear not.
