Stuff and Nonsense

Day #18 Huatulco - birdwatching

Today we are in Huatulco, Mexico and I'd been looking forward to this port for a long time as we had booked a birdwatching tour with the ship.
However, on this occasion, expectations certainly weren't met at all.
It was supposed to be a 3 hour tour, visiting "the most noted locations for spying the 227 bird species that thrive here, including 20 different species of flittering hummingbirds". Sounds good huh??
However, what actually happened was that over 30 people were bundled into 3 minivans and taken first to a lookout point where we saw a fleeting glimpse of some sort of oriole, some black hawks and frigate birds(which we can see anytime from the ship) and a pair of black iguanas.....
Then we were taken to some sort of trailer park where we saw a few other species including a parakeet, a woodpecker, a blue jay and a couple of other small birds. Absolutely no humming birds at all, and when I asked, I was told that there weren't any as there are not so may flowers at this time of year here!
My disappointment was huge after all the wonderful birds we had seen in Costa Rica, so I consoled myself with a huge ice cream when we got back on board!
Apart from that we had a good rest of the day - the port area was fine and the beach area was very handy and not too crowded. Tonight is the "white night" party so that should be fun.
