Sunday morning

This is ‘our’ beach at Fish Hoek. It looks quiet and this part at the far end is indeed quiet. However, in the distance it is a very busy Sunday morning with lots of people, walking, running, swimming, playing, or just sitting about. And there are large groups of wetsuit-clad youngsters being coached in sea swimming and life saving, surfing, canoeing - according to age. We were watching them for a while and then walked on. I don’t often get this far, as it is usually too hot, but today, although it is warm and sunny, it is also a bit windy, which tempers the heat.

So why Fish Hoek. It started out as Vishoek or Visch Hoek, which is Dutch for ‘fish corner’. Why it is now one English word and one Dutch is a mystery to everyone, but there it is.

It was fishing that drew people to this sheltered bay in the early days. The original farm was built on land granted for the establishment of a fishing business. When people later bought plots of land on which to build houses, it was the beach that was the attraction – ‘this most charming and delightful Seaside Resort’ was how the place was described when the plots were put up for sale. And today it draws lots of people who want to be by the sea . . . especially on a Sunday morning.
