Sad face :(
Oh, he looks so unhappy.
Today is one of those rare occasions where I have too much choice with regard to what to blip, but in the end I plumped for this one which is my favourite photo of the holiday.
Began the day with an early morning trip to La Selva Biological Reserve in Sarapiqui, a large piece of rain forest which was bought and is used for study. You have to be accompanied by a guide to visit but to be honest we learnt fairly early on during our trip to CR that if you want to see and appreciate the wildlife the best way to do it is with an experienced guide - the ability these guys have to spot things in the trees or identify birdsong is phenomenal. Today's guide was called Kevin, a young guy with a wealth of knowledge. The first thing he did was take us back to the car park where about 15ft from where our car was parked (and a stones throw from a children's play area) lay a huge boa constrictor digesting a meal it had eaten a few days earlier. It was very chilled and we got quite close (see extras). During the rest of the 2 hours we saw a good range of birds, peccaries, an agouti and one of the things I had set my heart on seeing whilst we were in CR - an eyelash viper (see extras) They are not a huge snake but are potentially dangerous and we were encouraged not to get too close on this occasion. I think he called the snake a kissing snake as it lives in trees at about human head height.
After our walk here we stopped for lunch at a local Soda, a kind of cheap roadside cafe where you can get hot snacks, and then decided to visit a place called Frog Land. It didn't look too enticing from the outside but turned out to be one of our favourite places of the holiday. A local man had purchased an area of land and was allowing it to regenerate into forest. We were shown around by his teenage son who was full of enthusiasm for the wildlife they had living there including various poison dart frogs, a sloth and its baby and this lovely red eyed tree frog who looks a bit grumpy to have been woken up. At the end of the trip he gave us fresh star fruit juice pressed from their own tree - a perfect way to end the tour
