Bright Prospects

I still cannot get my head round seeing an almost deserted marina whenever I have visited Southampton’s Ocean Village lately.
Work is still going on to revamp the marina facilities and today there was evidence of piling work.
But the absence of the usual hustle and bustle of yachts and motor cruisers on the move or even just moored while that happens brings a strange air to the Village.
But it should not be too long now before we see the marina back to full operation.
I can recall the time when the marina basin was used for commercial shipping as an integral part of Southampton Docks, and it is certainly deep enough to moor craft from tall ships and large yachts or motor cruisers. In the past it has also hosted round-the-world yacht races.
Now it is home to a new £50m luxury spa hotel complex, the tallest residential building in the city, and new restaurants and bars, not forgetting that the Royal Southampton Yacht Club, commands the most prominent position overlooking the marina. and has a friendly welcome for all yachtsmen and women using the marina to join members .
