Statues

There are a whole bunch of these dotted around Amsterdam. I think we saw most of them today as we wandered round in the freezing cold. It really is a lovely city, if just a teeny bit sleezy in places; I mean sales of red light bulbs must be higher here than the rest of Europe put together.

Also went to see Anne Frank’s house - which is terribly sad, but also thought provoking. There is a film at the end where they ask people about what Anne means to them; I enjoyed the elderly former schoolmate who had clearly been asked more than one time too many what Anne was like, and wasn’t afraid to express her irritation; but the one that struck the most was the American, filmed in an age long before Trump, who said, “people think this could never happen again, but it could happen again”. And then you see dog klaxon headlines in the Daily Telegraph about a ‘secret Jewish plan to stop Brexit’, and it doesn’t seem that far away.
