On the road to Manderley
I sometimes pass this beautiful Italianate villa in Oban, said to be the work of George Woulfe Brenan and to date from 1887. It's category B listed.
George Woulfe Brenan was born in 1844 and worked as a civil engineer in London and elsewhere in Europe. An art student and architect, he moved to Oban where he designed a number of buildings. His business was bought by James Falconer in c1920 and taken on by his son Lake Falconer, a well-known architect in Oban. He died in 1924 at his home in Victoria Terrace, now the Corran Guesthouse just along from Markie Dan’s Alehouse.
