Venice By Day
We moved into full tourist mode today, with a gondola ride, and a pootle about St Mark's Square, taking in the Basilica, Doge's Palace and Correr Museum. The gondola ride was a shared one which came as part of our hotel package, but we were lucky and had the two main seats at the back. We shared with 2 Korean (?) girls, who insisted on taking a selfie with us (I don't do selfies). I took their photo too, but it didn't make the cut for today! The gondolier didn't wear his straw hat, but he did sing a bit as he propelled us along.
The main blip is a standard tourist shot across the Bacino di San Marco, (almost the same as the one on the cover of our guidebook!).
The first extra shows that although bitterly cold it was very sunny, with sharp shadows falling on the Campanile Tower, and the second extra shows a little egret which we saw quite a few times resting on landing stage steps alongside the canals, this time disturbed by a passing gondola.
After getting quite lost walking yesterday I now felt that I knew Venice like the back of my hand, at least the bit from Rialto Bridge to St Marks Square. Our hotel was well placed, with a Burger King in one direction and a McDonald's in the other (we didn't need them!) and a Co-op about 2 minutes walk away.
