Life, not as we see it.

Ex pier, Alleppey Beach, Kerala

Day 18 (05/03) Around Alleppey, Kerala.

We thought today was to be an “at leisure” break, but no. We were whisked off to a backwater boat trip, one not on our schedule, so one we had to pay for, @ 2000 Inr. (you can “do the maths”). Worth every penny. Two hours up and down the creeks, abounding with birds and local folk who live on the banks. This is very early season, so quite quiet so we had the boat to ourselves, sitting on the roof with our heads swivelling like Wimbledon watchers as each sight emerged.
We are supposedly in Alleppey but in fact we are 40 kms away – don't know why, so when boating was over, we headed north to the town itself. Shouldn't really have bothered as little to see, other than miles of canals, many of which are choked with water hyacinth.
Lunched in a beachside restaurant offering veggie burgers just for a wee respite from curry. Came with a slab of cheese which would be a no no for vegetarians however this was not a 100% Pure Veg restaurant as they label themselves, and the burgers were bloody good for that. Beach is miles and miles long, virtually deserted, and it's original crowning glory, a huge pier, is derelict.
Back to our hotel for an hour at the deserted pool before a second boat trip included in our deal. Half an hour up stream and the same back. Lots more birds, well more of the same.

Writing this before heading for dinner – back to curries – then pack up to move on the morrow.
Last India city, Cochin,  tomorrow & Wednesday, before the night train to Marpurgo, Goa on the 7th.
