Favourite trail

Today we circumnavigated the hill of Pyhätunturi. It was a cold start at -16ºC but a clear sunny day over the high trail (pictured) was spectacular. We stopped briefly for hot drinks at the Kotamaja hut before the windy trail down through the woods back to Pyhäjärvi which we had to cross on an unmade trail to get back to the start. They used to cut the trail over the lake, but after losing a track machine through the ice they stopped cutting it, so now skiers just have to make their own tracks.

All-in-all a good day out, but a cold one with the sun dropping behind the hills a the end and the temperatures heading towards -20ºC. We were very happy to get home to hit the sauna.
