Corner of Iona St and Dickson St
Yesterday, I watched with interest a documentary about the impact of cruise liners and the visiting hordes they bring to Kirkwall, Orkney.
The BBC had originally approached me on a similar theme - about the impact on tourism on EH6 with Cigstourists getting shipped in as part of the new Lochs & Glans and Cigs tours being offered by Saga and the likes. A bit of Nessie, a fleeting glimpse of some cloud atop Ben Nevis and the chance to see your very own in the flash Cigs work in Leith. (Portobello had prohibitive import tarrifs in place, so Leith got the nod)
The problem is all these tourists rarely spend any money in the places they visit; keeping all the money for the bar at night after a hard day's touristing. It's thirsty work, I believe.
Anyway, I declined the opportunity to appear in the BBC programme (they were also going to interview Councillor Rose so there's no way I could appear on the show knowing that was going to happen)
But t shirts will be available by mail order; carefully and lovingly created in Leith but native aritsan craftsfolk, to ensure the indigenious people get the trickledown of the tourist money.
Cigs was also unavailable for comment.
Now to find April's entry for Cigs - the Saga Continues.
