Rievaulx Abbey

Glorious Autumn colours and the beautiful ruins of Rievaulx Abbey.

On a very dull day, with just a little brightness this walk from Helmsley along the Cleveland Way to Rievaulx was a riot of Autumn colour.

You can see from this photo why this is our favourite Yorkshire ruined abbey.

It was a Cistercian abbey. A temporary building was put up in 1131, and the first Stone building was built in 1132 - 1145. Then rebuilt in 1147.

In 1538 it was surpressed and sold to the Earl of Rutland who stripped and demolished it.
It was then incorporated into the parkland of Duncombe Park.
Painted in 1825 by J.M.W.Turner.

Now part of English Heritage.

In the cafe we had a lovely lunch of homemade vegetable soup, and a huge piece of homemade orange cake, before our walk back to Helmsley.

I don't know if anyone else thinks like me, that the colours this Autumn are the best we have had for years. May be due to the wet Summer?

Oh by the way, photo taken with new camera!!
