Tuatara
Endemic to New Zealand the Tuatara is regarded as a living fossil, the only surviving member of the order Rhynchocephalia, whose ancestors flourished at the same time as the dinosaurs, some 200million years ago.
We were pleased to see this one on 'visitor duty' at Zealandia, where threatened native species are protected. We saw the Takahe, North Island Robin, Kerero, lively Fantails and even a Kaka besides the noisy Tuis.
