Another Languedoc year...

Spike

That single, skinny, out-of-focus spike in the centre is wild asparagus. It's utterly delicious and tastes of peas fresh from the pod. At weekends we see lots of locals peering into hedgerows and carrying their haul in big carrier bags. Given that each spear is about 3mm wide you have to wonder how they spot this treasure. Our old labrador, who died last year, was an absolute wizard at finding wild asparagus. We had to whizz in quickly to pick it before she scoffed the lot.
