Burrow Mump

With a name like that, it just had to be visited!  We all visited the museum in Taunton this morning (extra) which was very interesting; of particular interest was a photographic exhibition on the work of Stanley Kenyon, local to this area - his work is amazing!

After lunch in the local Wetherspoons, the others did a bit of shopping whilst John and I went on to look at a ruined church on top of a hill - Burrow Mump.  Both words mean 'hill' with the original hill being a Norman motte with a medieval church built on there in the 15th century. The current ruined church was built in 1793 but not really used as they ran out of money! The land and ruin were donated to the National Trust in 1946 as a war memorial.  Our walk did not go entirely as planned and so I didn't get close up pictures (another day maybe) but we did walk along by the very swollen river - fascinating to see all that water swirling and moving very fast.  An interesting first day and, so far, it hasn't actually rained!
