Englandshire.
Up early today to pack up our room and start the long drive from Fort Augustus to Yorkshire. After breakfast at the hotel we checked out, and the lovely man at reception even googled the driving directions for us and printed them out. The hotel gives away home-made biscuits to leaving guests too, it's really a brilliant place to stay. Luckily we had no mist this morning, and were on the road before 10.30am.
The scenery on the first part of the journey is breathtaking, as the road meanders through the Great Glen with soaring mountains on each side, glassy-calm lochs and plunging ravines running with icy water. We started the drive well, and only had one instance of being stuck behind a very slow-moving vehicle which refused to pull over or slow down for us to pass. As we reached the motorway, we were getting hungry, and stopped for a filthy Burger King lunch... I'm always so disappointed in myself when I find it's quite tasty. The rest of the journey was unremarkable down the motorway, and a quick Blip of the England sign was the best I could do today!
We arrived home at 5.30 - the journey had taken exactly 6 hours and 58 minutes including breaks, so M did really well. He was shattered, but Mum had prepared us a lovely dinner which revived him a little before we all collapsed on the sofas with a glass of Drambuie. I fell asleep almost immediately and we were both in our bed by 10pm. Looking forward to starting our holiday properly tomorrow!
