The Path
This long curved path runs along the edge of the Kent Estuary between Arnside and Sandside.
As I walked it this morning I could imagine that coming up behind me was a steam engine hauling trucks full of coking coal from Durham to the iron ore smelters on the Furness peninsula. For that was its purpose when it was opened in 1876.
I also worked out that I have walked on it between 600 and 700 times since I retired to Arnside 25 years ago.
In the photo you can see the half going to Arnside and there is a similar length behind me.
It can, of course, be very cold and exposed. But the views across the water to the hills are always enough to compensate for that.
