Szent Istvan in a basilica, some shoes by a river

St. Stephen's Basilica is named in honour of Stephen, the first King of Hungary (c 975–1038), whose supposed right hand is housed in the reliquary. His massive and most impressive image dominates the altar of the church.

Nearby the Basilica, on the banks of the Danube, a more modern , much smaller, but immensely moving sculpture of 60 pairs of iron shoes commemorates the place where Jewish Hungarian citizens were rounded up , shot and dumped in the river by fascist militiamen in 1944/45.
