Souvenir
Last year (or maybe the year before), when the Minx and I were up in Fraserburgh, we went to the lighthouse museum. In the shop afterwards, I bought a couple of mugs as a souvenir for us.
Last week, in Looe, I saw a jug, bowl, and some plates in the same design. I didn't buy them, though; there's no lighthouse in Looe and it just seemed a bit unnecessary. But then on the Friday, when Abi and I went back to the shop and I saw them again, I realised that I'd regret it if I didn't get them.
You know, I can't hear the word 'souvenir' without thinking of the song by OMD. They used to play it at the Kiss* discos when I was in my teens as a slow dance and I was always disappointed. At that time it was pretty much the only OMD song I didn't like. (I still don't.)
It's funny, of bands I really love, there's a repeated phenomenon that I don't really like their most popular song: Simple Minds' 'Promised You A Miracle', Nick Cave's 'Where The Wild Roses Grow', and Japan's 'Nightporter' all spring to mind. Actually, a few months ago I came across a performance of the last of those on the Old Grey Whistle Test and, finally, I (kind of) saw its appeal.
