I decided to try and ‘fix’ the loose barrel on this rather battered lens.
It only meant stripping it down a bit and tightening some screws. But I made the mistake of taking the focus ring off the focus helix. And it’s a multi-start helix that is connected through sliders to another screw mechanism that moves the lens elements: Much more complicated than I envisaged!
After about a dozen attempts (which involved reassembly then putting on the camera and checking focus - and telling myself I was a f****** idiot and I wasn’t going to leave it until it was right) ) I found the necessary combination of settings to make it focus on infinity again.
I had to leave out a 2 thou shim under the lens mount - but what the hell they obviously shim them during fine tuning - and it now works again (and no longer wobbles).
