City Jewel
The city of Salisbury has dominated the headlines these past few weeks, yet even in troublesome times, the Wiltshire city is a treasure trove.
I fell in love with Salisbury many years ago, and among its many charms, for me the near 1,000 year old cathedral, and one of the earliest examples of English architecture, remains the jewel in the crown.
It is distinguished by possessing the tallest church spire in the UK and is reputed to have the largest cloister and cathedral close in Britain.
My picture today looking across the River Avon to the cathedral is taken from a spot close to the view of the cathedral across the water meadows, immortalised in the famous painting by nineteenth century artist John Constable.
Next month, the contemporary artist Michael Pendry is due to introduce his creation of Les Colombes which features a flock of around 2,500 white doves that will extend the length of the Cathedral nave. The Cathedral says it’s message is of resilience, peace and hope.
