Garden for a thousand years

Popped down to the Millennium Garden this morning to replace a couple of plants in one of the planters. There were a couple of hebes which died over the winter. The originals and the replacements were supplied free by Homebase. The upright pipes in front of the shelter are part of the musical bits and pieces scattered throughout the garden, along with various wooden sculptures.

It looks OK in the picture, but that doesn't show all the trampled plants, trodden soil and broken shrubs. I hope we can gradually wean people off the idea that the garden is simply a playground in which to make dens and turn it into a place where folk can sit and enjoy it. The local Salvation Army 'Shed' guys are making us some sections of low ranch-style fencing to put along the most vulnerable sections in an attempt to keep the kids off the garden, and with luck these won't be immediately smashed. We live in hope!
