Woodhorn
Today we visited Woodhorn Museum, Ashington. A former coal mine, now a heritage centre. This was one of the main reasons for our visit to this area having seen a small bit about Woodhorn on a TV programme some years ago. Fascinating place and all the facts about mining in this area are just jaw dropping. Very knowledgeable guides and as it is still quiet this time of year we had a wonderful chance to wander round almost undisturbed. Went into the gallery where the pit painters exhibits are and a group of schoolchildren were on a visit and being taught how to sketch a simple road like scene. They were brilliant and all really making a great effort. My main blip is the pit winding machinery.
Before we went to Woodhorn we drove around Ponteland. Husband used to live there when he was a lad some 45 years ago. And although he's not been back ever, he went straight to the house he used to live in. How clever is that. We ended up having a drive along the coast and sitting watching the sea for a bit. Couple of extras. Ponteland - the vicar's Pele Tower; St Mary's lighthouse at Whitley Bay. Another great day.
