Pine weevil

John’s photo
Last week John, along with others from a recently formed environmental group, laid out 48 pine weevil billets, the aim to check each one on a weekly basis for weevils. Today the first check was carried out, they found 3 weevils. An interesting project undertaken to establish weevil numbers in an area where a tree replant is due to take place.

In recent months locals have come together and successfully put a stop to the use of the pesticide Gazelle, a neonicotinoid used to kill pine weevils, on the land above and beside us. Following our success a constituted group has formed, part of its remit is to establish other methods of combatting weevil damage to new plants other than the use of pesticides. The billets will help establish if there is a weevil issue.
