Great white egret

This was on a small pool next to the parking lot for Cahokia Mounds in Illinois. Unfortunately there's not much to see left of this important pre-Columbian site in Illinois. 1,000 years ago 10-20,000 people of the Mississippian culture lived at this site, making it probably the most populous city in the world at that time. They constructed huge mounds, the biggest of which was inhabited by their ruler, Great Sun, and his family. The site was abandoned soon after, well before Europeans arrived. The largest mound is still there and you can go up it to get a great view of the site and of St Louis in the distance.
