X marks the female
I felt even more imprisoned today, with heavy rain adding to the constraints of my sprained ankle. I had to make do with a tiny spider for entertainment. This funny little jumping spider is common on the window frames, fence and shed in my garden. It's the Common zebra spider, Salticus scenicus, abundant and widespread in England, but easily overlooked at just 5-7mm long. This female shows the characteristic X-shaped patches of white hairs on its carapace, not seen on males.
