Saint Francis Cathedral, Santa Fe, NM
Nope, not done by Christo... The Cathedral Basiclia of Saint Francis of Assisi is entirely wrapped in white plastic sheeting while it is restuccoed and otherwise touched up to get ready for the 400th anniversary of the founding of Santa Fe next year. I think this means that after just getting over the 300th anniversary of Albuquerque, we get a lot more silliness again next year from the local politicians. Somehow the state is paying for this.
My friend Barbara and I went up to Santa Fe today to get some cone 10 clay for an upcoming firing and then did a bit of site seeing including a bunch of historic churches and the state capitol complex. Interesting, but I am more of an Albuquerque person.
We will be doing a cone 10 firing later this month at the studio. This is a lot hotter than we normally fire - cone 6 and the clays look a lot more interesting, at least from the samples. It will be a soda firing, and I like to leave the outside of a piece raw in soda to pick up the naturally forming soda glaze, so this is going to be fascinating. I am making a recycled glass glaze for the insides. I am really psyched up about this.
Today, I am grateful for the day I was given, interesting history, the opportunity to explore and a beautiful day.
