Shoes on the Danube - Budapest Day 2
A good portion of the day was spent in the Jewish quarter. We started at the central market where it seemed possible to buy at least twenty varieties of paprika. After that we enjoyed coffee and patisserie in a lovely traditional Jewish coffee shop. We then visited the stunning Great Synogogue including the holocaust cemetery of the 2000+ Jews killed by the Hungarian facist regime or simply starved in the ghetto. The blip is the “Shoes on the Danube” memorial to hundreds of Jews lined up on quayside and shot so their bodies were simply washed away by the Danube.A poignant reminder that just 70 years ago Europe was not as peaceful as today.
