Hissing Sid

I was mowing the front lawn today. As I moved along the hedgerow, I saw this. It had been hit by a car I suspect. It was in a place that, should Mrs SoL see it, the screams would have been heard in the UK. It is a Couleuvre, one of the species of grass snake. Harmless to us, as it is not venomous, but it can surprise with its size. They can also climb trees, which is a little disconcerting. They are the largest snake in France and can reach several feet. This one was over a metre long (my foot for size comparison). I have moved it to a safe distance from the house. We had a bigger one in the woodpile behind the chicken coop last year, alive, it seemed to take ages to slither off. Mrs SoL has not been behind the coop since then.
Update: I have since checked the internet, and this is a Couleuvre Verte et Jaune, otherwise known as a western whip snake. Every day, something new is learnt.
