Wash and Polish!

There is only one slightly negative aspect of cycling and that is the weekly clean, oil and polish of the bike. I do enjoy it but I always think that it is an hour where I could be out riding. It was the turn of my Cyclocross bike today which by its very nature gets absolutely manky and seems to take twice as long to clean.

Had a really good RPM class this morning. Had a pre-class recap of resistance and timing and it really got me thinking again. Think I have been turning up too much lately as I have been way off the pace and the Stupendous one reminded me that it is equally as important to keep the beat as it is to turn the dial up.

There is a guy called Joe that I meet in the changing rooms on a Sunday morning. Last year he had a heart attack which resulted in a tripple heart bypass and now comes to the gym 3-4 times a week to work out. When I speak to him I get an overwhealming Dickensian sense of the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come. I was living the same life as he was- drinking, smoking and attrocious diet. His epiphany was precipitated by his coronary troubles whereas mines by the realisation that if I continued living the way I was, I would not be around to to run about after my children. I wasn't as far down the road as him but now our path is once again going in the same direction and that Ghost of Christmas yet to come won't be showing us the unkempt graveyard....

"I am not the man I was. I will not be the man I must have been but for this intercourse. Why show me this, if I am past all hope! ... I will honour Christmas in my heart, and try to keep it all the year. I will live in the Past, the Present, and the Future. The Spirits of all Three shall strive within me. I will not shut out the lessons that they teach. Oh, tell me I may sponge away the writing on this stone!"
