Day two, we drove out to the trail head for Ancient Lakes which is a fascinating place with amazing geology. It is an arid landscape but not dry enough for cactus, mostly sagebrush and desert type of flowers.

The one pictured is (I think) some kind of Mariposa Lily and there is a small bee in the one on the bottom but didn't get a good shot of it. I love this flower and it became my new favorite wildflower.

We hiked through the dry land and eventually came upon Ancient Lake (extra) - just gorgeous landscape, with straight up basalt cliffs, with crazy talus slopes under them, and cataracts gushing water.

Pitched a tent under a tree on a flat grassy spot and spent the afternoon watching birds (osprey, heron, lots of songbirds), and exploring the area.
