Market Cross

I couldn’t resist taking another walk in Salisbury today.and stopped by the city’s historic Poultry Cross.

It’s been there more than 500 years although a previous monument is reckoned to have stood on the site in the city centre for much longer, since 1307.

The elaborate stone structure signifies the site of an ancient market. In fact there were once four market crosses like this in the city, with thet hreeothers marking different purpose markets — for cheese, livestock and wool..

Not that this one is totally divorced from its historic pedigree and normally forms part of the city’s regular Tuesday and Saturday street markets.

For the remainder of the week like today it becomes one of the city’s tourist attractions, and mine was not the only camera in evidence.
