Cemetery on a Hill on a Gorgeous June Morning

It was just a delightful morning in every single way. The temperatures were lovely, the sky was blue, and sunshine was promised. So where does a girl go to celebrate such a day? To a cemetery, of course!

I had decided to drive a back way into town, and my route took me through Pennsylvania Furnace, where there is a particular favorite cemetery on a pretty hill, overlooking a farm property with cows.

The cemetery has always been surrounded by tall trees, but I noticed some time ago when driving by that quite a few had been cut recently. I can only hope it was for some legit reason, like tree disease. I am a fan of trees, and I liked it the way it was. But the light comes through better now, so the gravestones may cast even deeper shadows on the green grass.

The cows were friendly and curious, and they looked at me as I walked around taking pictures. They were not quite as intrigued with me as that one time before, when they all came and crowded along the fence, as though they too wanted to come and hang out with me in the cemetery.

So I'm presenting this lovely rural scene, with gravestones and cows. But let me tell you about the shot that I MISSED. The minute that I walked into the cemetery, there was a mighty flapping of wings in a tree off to my left. What a noise!

And then suddenly, from the tallest tree, a huge BALD EAGLE took flight, pursued by two much smaller birds. Of course, my camera was still in its bag, so I didn't get a single shot. (And the odds of any quick shot I'd get turning out well would be slim, I think.)

So here's a verbal description of a magical moment from this Girl Who Was Not Quick Enough With the Camera. :-) I can barely explain how it made me feel. I felt like a very lucky girl. It might have been the biggest bird I've ever seen in person. And I felt like that moment . . . that it was a special blessing; that it was a gift meant especially for me.

The song: Jewel, You Were Meant for Me.
