First Ice
First ice of Winter chills
The mind, with fear fills
Will we see the season through
Arise to see the world renew
Or will we instead sucumb
To cold that makes fingers numb
One of those who is lost
A number, part of the cost
One of several, the human tithe
Paid to keep others alive
A one whose loved ones grieve
And who struggle to conceive
The answer to the question
As to why we are now gone
Could there have been a way
Something the Gods it would sway
Somethin that would change their mind
To move away from path defined
And let the person herein live
Another lifetime to give
That they might not now see
Despair, tears running free
Ah but that is maybe to come
For now, here's door to home
A raging fire in hearth burns
And loved one towards you turns
Plants kiss from jewelled lips
From back sodden coat strips
And with look that love's earned
Say's "Thank Good, You have returned"
