Operation countdown
Into Glasgow to the Golden Jubilee hospital for pre op assessment for total knee replacement.
What does this involve? Well you are a weighed, measured, prodded and your medical history checked.
Well, I got a bit of a shock when one nurse asked me :
“Are all your organs your own?”
I assured her that to the best of my knowledge they were.
Another nurse rattle through my medical history.
“ I see you have had brain surgery.”
At which point I leapt out of my seat.
“I certainly haven’t.”
“Oh sorry…mistake…this sometimes happen when notes get digitised.
Next the anaesthetist.
“Do you want to watch the operation on screen or do you want to sleep?” he asked affably.
(I already knew that 1 in 20 opt to remain fully awake.)
“ I find that there are two types of people who want to watch themselves being operated on. – the engineers and the carpenters,” he added.
“I hear there is an awful lot of sawing and clanking,” I said.
“Yes, it is quite noisy in the operating theatre. But you can put on headphones, listen to music, lie back and enjoy the show. Think about it.”
With that I went home. I am still thinking about it. What would you do?
Oh yes, I have agreed to take a cancellation if one come up .
