The waving poppies at the fort...
A visit to Fort Nelson today, which sits on a hilltop, overlooking Portsmouth Harbour and was built to protect the harbour from a land invasion by the French. It's a fascinating place, and at just £3 for parking, what a bargain of a place to indulge in nautical history. One of the 3 Royal Armouries, the other 2 being in London and in Leeds of course.
Turrets, tunnels, mortars, cannons....we're talking big fancy guns here....loads of them.....whoppers..... and then the 14-18now poppies, waving over the embankment, all made for a treat of a day. A few extras, my some of the cannons were fancy..... and unique by all accounts.
Tempted to have a trip in to Portsmouth to visit my old WRNS training ground, HMS Nelson, and then HMS Excellent on Whale island where I was posted, but time ran away with us......another time :)
