Clachtoll and Clashnessie

Whenever we are in Sutherland we check the programme of ranger-led activities to see if there are any events planned around the time of our stay. Today there was a walk at Clachtoll so we joined that with two other holiday-makers.

Over the course of about three and half hours the ranger spoke about, and showed us, all sorts of interesting features of the area related to agriculture, archaeology, botany, geography, geology, natural history, and social history. He also identified the dragonfly that I blipped on Sunday. My blip shows the view of the split rock, modelled by a lamb, from the spot where we stopped to eat our lunch.

My favourite part of the walk was to learn about the broch which was only excavated last year. It has been the richest broch excavation ever in terms of finds, which included lamps that still contained whale fat from the time of the broch's destruction two thousand years ago. My first extra was taken from inside the broch, looking out to sea.

After the walk Mr hazelh and I drove to Drumbeg for a cup of tea, and to pay a visit to Clashnessie beach (second extra). We reminisced about a wonderful day here on August 2nd 2013 (with interesting consequences).

Tomorrow we move on to our final holiday destination. We are super-excited at the prospect of spending a couple of days with the Winsfords in Pitlochry.

Exercise today: walking (18,051 steps)
