Dorothy Eckford and the Crab Spider

I was going to blip a photograph of  "Dorothy Eckford" a beautiful white old fashioned sweet pea but then I saw the crab spider hiding on one of the petals. More Dorothy Eckford's will be coming along but I might not see another crab spider for ages. These are brilliant spiders - they don't make webs to capture their prey. Instead they change colour to blend into the background and then ambush their prey. I've moved this one onto a red sweet pea to see if it changes - assuming I can find it again.  Incidentally Dorothy Eckford was developed by Henry Eckford ("the sweet pea man") in 1902 and named after one of his grand daughters. Unfortunately it was launched just when the Spencer type of sweet peas were about to sweep all other sweet peas aside and so it never really took off. Remarkably the seed can still be obtained and it produces an almost pure white flower with masses of scent.
