roseate terns

This picture may not look much (it was taken from a boat), but I’ve blipped it because it contains a pair of roseate terns. Roseate terns are one of the country’s rarest nesting seabirds and we were lucky to spot and see them.

The pair are nesting along with many arctic terns on Coquet Island off the Northumberland coast. The island is an RSPB protected reserve. Although you can get fairly close on a boat, you are not allowed to land on it.

The extra is a heavily cropped photo of a sedge warbler – taken on the mainland at the end of the day.
