King of the castle
It's been a still, soft day here on the western coast, lacking the clear winter sunshine that has illuminated many of today's blips from further east.
This old farmstead was purchased some years ago by the National Trust who restored it enough to keep ruination at bay. It's an example of a typical smallholding dating back a couple of hundred years and was probably in continuous use until the latter part of the 20th century. In the 1920s or 30s the original dwelling was abandoned, replaced by a new house which stands just to the left. This old one became a workshop and store. Around it is a range of small stone outbuildings and a jumble of random structures that accrued to serve different agricultural purposes but which together create a sort of unity. They include a wooden railway wagon (right) that I have previously blipped, a wartime Nissen hut and the grain bin which today provided my companion with an elevated viewpoint.
The name of the farm, Castell Corwynt, translates as Castle of the Strong Winds, and since it stands on high ground a short distance from the coast it is an appropriate one, but all was quiet today as the dim daylight seeped away into dusk.
