Take me to your leader...
Damselflies, when looked at closely, are strange beings. They have a certain alien look to them, at least to me. I suppose it is the bulging eyes - the very thing that allows them to effectively locate both predators and prey. This one, a female Variable Dancer, is quite drab, which I suppose helps her avoid becoming bird food. Every summer, we have loads of these small odes in the garden and there are always significantly more females than males. I'll have to see if I can get a shot of one of the males as some are a lovely shade of lavender. As the name suggests, there is significant variance in the colors in both sexes.
It is another wretchedly hot, humid day. Ten minutes outside is guaranteed to break a major sweat and even the bugs seem a little put off today. I've put fresh water out for the birds (and the insects too - many need water) and have refilled hummingbird feeders. In this heat the sugar water can go rancid very quickly so changing the solution every 2 days is a must.
MIL and her 2 nephews will be here today. Hubs is grilling burgers and chicken (with his secret marinade). I've made a tasty potato salad and one of the cousins is bringing fresh fruit for desert. We'll have an early meal so that the cousins can get on the road at a reasonable time, and we can get MIL back to the home and tucked in for the night. Wish it wasn't so hot as it would have been nice to sit outside, but that's out of the question with temps expected to hit 97F (35C).
So, an early blip today. Hopefully it provides a little laugh.
