From Bough to Bowl to Boca
The plums again! From bough to bowl, to boca (mouth, in Portuguese) tonight.
We did a wine tasting at Cecílio and Ermelinda's, with the Padre as well, who is leaving tomorrow to lead a tour of Prague and Poland. We saved bits of different wines we had in England, on the ferry (French), Spanish, and Alentejano, to see what they thought. Because Alentejano wines are so good, it's rare to see any other sort, except maybe from another part of Portugal.
Anyway, being true Alentejanos, there was plenty of food as well; I put the last of our plums into a pastry case for dessert. Didn't want to hide the beautiful plums, so made the cinnamon custard first, and then put the halved plums on top, and made a port wine sauce, which we served hot, with ice-cream. I'd have preferred Greek yoghurt, but not been to Reguengos for supermarket yet. The conversation got pretty intense at different moments, everything from attitudes towards the Roma to ecumenism to the sanctity of marriage - love that we are friends enough to challenge each other; as you might imagine, with a Catholic priest, to non-churgchgoer to committed Protestants, we have differing views.
