Distant Dunnock

Distant dunnock
Hanging on a branch
Looking for a meal
Maybe a seed, perchance
A gang of goldfinch
Nyger feeder hoarding
Any unwary interloper
Instantly scolding
One reliant robin
Waiting for a mealworm
In his feeder's hand
They wriggle and they squirm
A bonnie blackbird
And her lovely mate
Look on in silence
Patiently they wait
Springy sparrows
Bounce around the floor
Looking in crack and crevice
Always wanting more
Starlings swoop
In a murmuration wave
A secure roost
Is what they really crave
A wild bird flood
Did the garden cover
Now Autumn silence ensues
Feeding time is over
